Microsoft is testing Windows AI features on RTX GPUs, expanding the tools beyond NPUs and making AI tools available to more PCs.
The update comes via the Windows App SDK 2.2 Experimental 9. It enables RTX 30‑series GPUs with at least 6GB VRAM to run AI tasks locally. Developers need Windows Insider builds and Developer Mode to try it out.
This change means features like text rewriting, Photos app Super Resolution, object extraction, and erase tools can now run on GPUs already in use.
Copilot+ was originally tied to NPUs, but Microsoft is shifting to a more flexible setup that uses GPUs when possible and the cloud when needed.
For users, this opens access to AI without waiting for new hardware. Older PCs with RTX cards will be able to handle AI workloads, while making Windows 11 more inclusive.
