Nintendo will update the Switch 2 with user-replaceable batteries starting in autumn 2026. The rollout covers the EU, UK, and other regions, including Saudi Arabia, UAE, and South Africa. The move comes ahead of new EU regulations requiring removable batteries in consumer electronics.
The updated Switch 2 will have a 5,172mAh battery, slightly smaller than the current 5,220mAh unit. The console’s weight increases to 401g, about 10g heavier. Nintendo’s new Joy-Con 2 controllers will also feature replaceable batteries, making them easier to maintain.
The change is tied to the EU Right to Repair Directive (effective July 31, 2026) and the EU Batteries Regulation (effective February 2027). Both laws push manufacturers to design devices with parts that users can replace without specialized tools.

Other controllers in the Switch lineup will follow. The upcoming Switch 2 Pro controller will include a removable battery with 16 percent less capacity than the current version. Nintendo’s N64 and GameCube controllers will also be updated with replaceable batteries.
