Sony is betting heavily on the phablet form factor. The Japanese electronics giant just unveiled the Sony Xperia Z Ultra, a phablet that features a 6.4-inch 1080p HD display and packs a rather impressive set of hardware specs. The Sony Xperia Z Ultra is really thin, coming in at only 6.5mm thick and weighs only 212 grams despite the size. Just like the Xperia Z, the Ultra is a waterproof device.
The Sony Xperia Z Ultra runs on a really fast 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor and packs 4G LTE connectivity to boot. These are reasons enough to drool over the Xperia Z Ultra but of course, there are other nice things about this new device. The Xperia Z Ultra offers 16GB of built-in storage with a microSD slot that is compatible to cards of up to 64GB. That’s a total of 80GB of mobile storage. The battery is 3,000mAh, which is huge but could be insufficient considering the size of the display. For imaging, the Xperia Z Ultra features an 8-megapixel Exmor RS sensor and a front-facing 2-megapixel camera.
What’s notable here is that this is the first time Sony is bringing its Triluminos display technology to a mobile device. Triluminos display was introduced by Sony in its recent crop of Bravia TVs. This type of display is the best from Sony so far as it recreates reality almost perfectly. Colors are rich and vibrant and hues that were previously impossible to replicate are now available on a Triluminos screen. Sony takes advantage of the huge display by pairing it with apps for writing notes and sketches. It has handwriting recognition is said to be compatible with any graphite pencil, capacitive stylus or metal pen with tip diameter of over 1mm.
