Roblox now requires facial or ID verification for chat worldwide

The goal is to improve safety and ensure chat features are used responsibly.

Roblox now requires all users worldwide to complete facial or ID verification to access chat features. The move is part of the company’s push to improve safety and ensure communication tools are used responsibly across age groups.

The process uses a third-party provider called Persona. Players can either scan their face using a camera or upload a government-issued ID. Roblox says images and videos are deleted after processing. For those aged 13 and above, ID verification is available as an alternative to facial scans.

Age checks are not needed to play Roblox. But they are now required for chat. Verified users are placed into six age brackets: under 9, 9–12, 13–15, 16–17, 18–20, and 21+. Players can chat within their group and with adjacent groups. For kids under 9, chat is disabled by default unless parents give consent.

Roblox explains that this system is more accurate than relying on self-reported birth years during account creation. If the system misjudges a user’s age, they can appeal and verify through ID or parental updates.

The change follows lawsuits and investigations in the US over child safety concerns, including grooming and exposure to explicit content. Roblox’s new rules are part of its broader effort to protect younger players while keeping communication open for older users.
