PlayStation architect Mark Cerny has confirmed that frame generation will eventually make its way to PlayStation platforms. The feature was developed with AMD and uses machine learning to add extra frames, making gameplay look smoother without the need for more raw power from the console.
Cerny explained that while the technology is coming, you should not expect updates this year. The announcement follows Sony’s rollout of PlayStation Super Resolution (PSSR), its new upscaling system that shares the same algorithm as AMD’s FSR Redstone. PSSR is already improving image quality on the PS5 Pro, with system-level toggles and patches for supported games.
It’s not clear whether frame generation will be limited to the PS5 Pro or if it will be part of the next PlayStation console.
On PC, similar features from NVIDIA and AMD have been used to boost frame rates in demanding titles, so bringing them to PlayStation could help developers deliver smoother performance without sacrificing visuals.
