The iPhone 18 Pro Max in the US still runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X80 5G modem instead of Apple’s new C2 modem. TechInsights confirmed this in a teardown, showing a clear difference between US and global versions of the device.
The US model comes with Qualcomm’s SDR875 RF transceiver alongside the Snapdragon X80. Apple’s C2 modem is already inside the smaller iPhone 18 Pro and the new iPhone Duo worldwide, and the Pro Max outside the US. Specs in the US mention C2 for the regular Pro but leave the Pro Max modem blank. In the Philippines, Apple lists C2 for both Pro models.
The Snapdragon X80 powered the iPhone 17 Pro series last year, so its use here is familiar. Apple did add a new, in-house-designed mmWave antenna module for the US Pro Max.
Apple has said why there’s a difference. Analysts say it’s Apple’s 2023 deal with Qualcomm, which requires the company to keep buying modems until 2026. That contract could explain why the US Pro Max still ships with Qualcomm parts.
It is not about technical limits. Apple says the C2 modem supports mmWave 5G, gives faster upload speeds than the C1X, and uses 15% less energy.

For users in the US, their iPhone 18 Pro Max will work fine on 5G networks. But Apple’s own modem rollout is clearly staggered. Global buyers already get the C2, while US buyers may have to wait until Apple’s Qualcomm deal ends.
