How to pair your Joy-Con controllers to your iOS 16 iPhone or iPad

Another surprising feature that iOS 16 brings is the ability to pair your Joy-Con Switch controllers to your iPhones (and eventually iPads when they get iOS 16). This one flew over my head, only finding out about it recently.

It’s just another one of those features that Apple snuck in that add more value to their devices, like the haptic feedback on keyboards and the battery percentage.

Controllers aren’t new to Apple devices. PlayStation Dual Sense controllers and Xbox’s wireless controllers were supported in the past. But now that iOS 16 is out, those who have a Nintendo Switch now have the option to use their Joy-Cons on their iPhones.

In this tutorial, we’re going to show you how you can pair your Joy-Cons to your iPhones on iOS 16.

How to pair your Joy-Con controllers to your iPhone

  1. Press and hold the pairing button on either Joy-Con Controller until the green light moves back and forth. It’s the tiny button between the shoulder buttons. You can use either left or right Joy-Con for this.

  1. Turn on Bluetooth on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. In Settings> Bluetooth, you will see either Joy-Con (L) or Joy-Con (R) in Other Devices, depending on which one you want to pair.
  3. Tap on the Joy-Con to complete pairing.

Take note that not all mobile games are compatible with controllers. I tried using it on Minecraft and it works fine.

To disconnect the Joy-Cons, go to Settings> Bluetooth, tap on the blue information icon and tap disconnect.
